The Termination Process
If you are firing an employee, you should understand the process you should go through to minimize any uncomfortable feelings as well as to protect you legally as an employer:
- Proper termination procedures. Know how to use procedures that minimize a fired employee’s resentment toward you and your business.
- Termination meeting. The sole purpose of a termination meeting is to provide a simple and concise statement of the decision to terminate the employment relationship. Using a termination meeting checklist will help you stay on track.
- Exit interviews. Know the procedures to follow if an employee informs you that he or she is leaving and ending the employment relationship.
- Final communication to a departing employee. What you must, or might want, tell an employee who has quit or been fired.
