Together with Powerware UPS products, computer network systems protected by LanSafe software are more reliable and less prone to down time and data corruption. LanSafe is capable of connecting to UPSs that are directly connected to the network, in addition to those that are attached to computers via USB or serial ports. LanSafe can manage up to 64 computers that receive protected power from one UPS. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.0 System Requirements -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Supported Platforms - Windows - Linux - VMware - HP-UX - IBM AIX - Mac OS - Novell NetWare - SCO OpenServer - SGI IRIX - Sun Solaris Sparc - Sun Solaris Intel Windows Minimum Requirements - 200 MHz processor - 32 MB of RAM - 30 MB of available hard-disk space - Monitor resolution must be at least 800 by 600 pixels (1024 by 768 recommended) with 16 bit color (thousand of colors) Approximate Minimum Requirements for Other Operating Systems - 200 MHz processor - 32 MB of RAM - 16 MB of available hard-disk space VMware Minimum Requirements ? 2.0GHz or higher processor ? 2GB of RAM ? 560MB minimum or 2GB recommended !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The autostart function is configured in one of the following ways. 1. If /etc/init.d or /sbin/init.d or /etc/rc.d/init.d exists, the ls.init file is placed in one of these directories. This file can be found in the install tar file inside /1_install/ directory. 2. If /etc/init.d, /sbin/init.d, or /etc/rc.d/init.d does not exist, and the file /etc/inittab exists, "$instpath/Bin/PowerMonitor.sh&" is added to the end of /etc/inittab file. Replace $instpath with the actual path for LanSafe directory. 3. If 1 and 2 fail, and if the file /etc/rc.d/rc.local exists, then add "$instpath/Bin/PowerMonitor&" to the end of the file /etc/rc.d/local. Replace $instpath with the actual path for LanSafe directory. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4.0 Windows Installation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ 4.1 Before You Install ------------------------------ - Install the Powerware USB / Plug and Play driver if necessary. To use LanSafe on Windows with a Powerware UPS that does not support USB-HID, you must first install/upgrade to Powerware UPS Driver 2.2.52. This driver is available on the Software CD and at www.powerware.com. - Close all Control Panel windows before installing the software. Leaving Control Panels such as the Services Control Panel open during installation can prevent the LanSafe service and other components from being installed properly. ------------------------------ 4.2 Windows Standard Install ------------------------------ When installing LanSafe for Windows you have three options: Option 1. Install LanSafe for a single computer connected to a single UPS. 1) Connect a UPS to the local workstation or to the network. Consult the UPS manual for more information. 2) The computer on which LanSafe will be installed should receive power from the UPS. 3) Run the LanSafe Installer. 4) Follow the instructions in the LanSafe Setup program for a "LanSafe Controller" installation. Option 2. Install LanSafe for multiple computers that receive power from a single UPS. 1) Choose one computer (Controller) to monitor and control the UPS and connect the UPS to this computer or to the network. Consult the UPS manual for more information. 2) Run the LanSafe Installer. 3) Follow the instructions in the LanSafe Setup program for a "LanSafe Controller" installation. 4) For each additional computer (Member) receiving power from the UPS, run the LanSafe Setup program on those computers and follow the instructions for a "LanSafe Member" installation. Option 3. Install only the main window (GUI) for remotely viewing UPS system status and accessing UPS management capabilities. 1) LanSafe Only installation can be placed on any supported Microsoft Windows computer connected to the network. 2) Run the LanSafe Installer. 3) Follow the instructions in the LanSafe Setup program for a "LanSafe Only" installation. 4) A LanSafe icon is placed in the Windows Start menu. Note: LanSafe 5.0.8 and newer can be upgraded by the LanSafe Setup application without losing configuration setting or logs. LanSafe can be upgraded in two ways: * Run a Setup application of a newer version of LanSafe. * Use the Setup application to perform a partial uninstall of LanSafe. At a future time, run a newer version of the LanSafe Setup application and use the existing settings. ------------------------------ 4.2.1 Windows USB Installation ------------------------------ There is no need to install drivers for HID-UPS like 9140. For other USB supported UPSs that communicate with a computer via Windows USB/Plug-and-Play, use the new standalone Powerware USB/Plug-and-Play driver. Follow the instructions in the driver ReadMe file (UPSDriversReadMe.txt) for information about installing this driver or upgrading your current driver. After the driver is installed, run the LanSafe installer as described in section 4.2. ------------------------------ 4.2.2 Windows Silent Installation ------------------------------ The LanSafe for Windows installer supports a silent installation mode. Silent installation is generally used for larger deployments of LanSafe over a network. For more information about silent installs consult the manual/online help. ------------------------------ 4.3 Compatibility with Windows XP Service Pack 2 ------------------------------ Windows XP Service Pack 2 enables a Personal Firewall network security feature that could affect the deployment of LanSafe. In order for LanSafe to work properly, you must ensure that program and port exceptions are added to the firewall so that communication between LanSafe components is not blocked. Exceptions must exist for the following software components: * LanSafe Power Monitor (Program) * LanSafe SNMP Proxy Agent (UDP Ports 161 and 162) * LanSafe Status@aGlance (TCP Port 7015) While some exceptions may be made automatically, you may need to manually configure the Windows Personal Firewall for some LanSafe components. Please see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 842242 for instructions on how to unblock programs and open ports manually in the Windows Firewall (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=842242). To verify the above software components are communicating properly, use the procedures below. To verify LanSafe Power Monitor communication: 1. Monitor the LanSafe Controller on the XP2 computer remotely from another LanSafe installation using the Open Controller function. 2. Verify LanSafe opens a connection to the LanSafe Controller. To verify LanSafe SNMP Proxy Agent Communications: 1. Verify the ability to browse the RFC1628 MIB via a Network Management System (NMS). 2. Verify SNMP traps are sent to the NMS. To verify LanSafe Status@aGlance Communications: 1. Open a web browser. 2. Using the browser location bar or open URL function, type the URL of the LanSafe Controller to be monitored. The URL is the IP address of the computer followed immediately by the port number ":7015". For example, if the IP address of your computer is 10.255.51.255, the URL you will type is - http://10.255.51.255:7015 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.0 AIX Installation -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ 5.1 Before You Install ------------------------------ - Uninstall all versions of LanSafe on the computer on which you will install this software. - The LanSafe SNMP agent will work only if the snmpd daemon was installed with the AIX operating system.
