Identify Printer by Address
The Identify Printer screen allows you to directly specify a network printer by one of its addresses. Select and enter one of the following addresses for the desired printer. Then click Next.
Note: You can find the address that is currently configured on the printer by printing an HP Jetdirect configuration page.
- Hardware Address. A LAN hardware address (also called a Station Address or MAC address) uniquely identifies a device on the local network.
- IP Address. An IP (Internet Protocol) Address uniquely identifies each device on a TCP/IP network. It consists of a four-byte number (32 bits) in the form n.n.n.n, where n represents a number from 0 to 255, and is usually assigned by a network administrator. When shipped from the factory, the HP Jetdirect print server assumes a default IP address of 192.0.0.192 two minutes after power up. This default IP address is not a valid address but can be used to initially identify a new printer. However, there is no guarantee that you will find the correct printer if multiple new printers have been added to the network. Instead, identifying the printer by its LAN hardware address is recommended. If the TCP/IP protocol is not enabled on this computer, this field will be disabled.
- IP Hostname. An IP hostname is a friendly (or easy-to-identify) name that can be used in place of the printer's IP address. It can be used when a name server on the network has been set up to map hostnames to their corresponding IP addresses. If a hostname has been assigned and configured on the printer (for example, printer1.marketing.com), you can specify the hostname to identify the printer.
- IPX Address. An IPX (Internet Packet Exchange) address uniquely identifies a device on an IPX/SPX network. Usually, an IPX address is automatically self-configured on the network device when it is connected to the network and powered on. Since an IPX address consists of a network number and the LAN hardware address, you can use this address to identify the desired printer. If the IPX protocol is not enabled on this computer, this field will be disabled.
Note: To set up printers that are not located on the local network, see Adding Printers on Large IP Networks.
If a selected printer has been protected by an SNMP Community Name or Jetdirect password, you will be prompted for the Community Name or password. If your entry is not valid, you cannot install the printer using this wizard.
